The music program consists of five main areas of focus:
Aural Skills This is an area of focus throughout the year that emphasizes ear training using primarily the Kodaly method. Students are encouraged to clap, sing, identify and dictate rhythms and melodies specific to their grade level.
Creative Movement/Drama Through the use of instrument and vocal music, students demonstrate the ability to recognize beat and rhythm by responding creatively to the music being played. Also, various poems and stories are used to help students in this area. Another aspect is the use of manipulatives such scarves, ribbons, masks and beanbags to enhance their enjoyment and appreciation of these activities.
Vocal Skills At all grade levels the students are encouraged to participate in singing activities, not only in the classroom setting but also through the Maple Leaf Choir program. Grades 3-5 students have the option to join the Maple Leaf Choir in September and January. This choir takes place during the lunch hour on Days 4 and 9 for term 1.
Instrumental All classes are involved with activities using the Orff instruments (xylophones, percussion instruments) and also Boomwhackers. As well, grade 3-5 students learn to play the soprano recorder. Kindergartens have their own set of percussion instruments. Proper care and respect of the instruments in encouraged. Grade 5 students enjoy learning to play the ukulele in January.
Listening Students from all grades are taught to gain an appreciation for classical music through listening. The primary grades learn to listen to this form of music mostly through the creative movement component and the junior students focus on composer studies and guided listening lessons.
The music program contains active music centers throughout the year for students. The following centers are utilized: Note Centre Listening Centre Computer Centre Game Centre (a variety)
Music Ace 1 is in use in the computer lab throughout the year for students from grades 1-5. This is a computer program which incorporates both theory and ear training. The students work at their own pace with a tutor
