All school council information including minutes will now be available for reference in the library.  A copy of school council guidelines will also be kept there.

Elected Positions

·          The elected positions in council are; Chair, Vice Chair, Treasurer and Secretary.  There is also a non elected position of Community Representative.  All positions are held for a two year term at which time the position is up for re-election.  If there are no contenders and the individual currently holding a particular position wishes to continue they may do so.

·          Tom Vosper will be continuing his second year term in the position of Chair,  Daniela Schulze was elected Vice Chair, Marijana Haag will be continuing her position as Treasurer as there were no contenders for the position, Susan Mahabir is continuing her second year term as Secretary.  To date the position of Community Representative has not been filled.

Council Members

It was noted not all individuals who completed nomination forms were present at our first meeting.  Letter to be sent notifying them if the form was completed and sent in they are considered to be members of council and are therefore required to attend all meetings. They will have the opportunity to resend their nomination if the form was completed in error.

Principal’s Report

·          The construction of the school will not change the current exterior footprint just the interior will be changed.  The Kindergarten class will be approximately same size just wider but shorter.  Upon Board approval the first stage will be “Hording” this entails paving and blocking off the construction zone(s).

·          The priority is to keep the kindergarten and grade 1 class within the school.  All other classes except the grade 3 pod are expected to be relocated to the portables which are now fully wired.

·          The possibility of having air conditioning added to the school was discussed.  Further discussion is needed as Capital Funding will have to be considered.

·          There are concerns within the neighborhood as to the length of time, vandalism issues and the unsightly appearance of the portables.  Some suggestions as to the route of action are that they contact the Superintendent or the City directly.

·          The EQAO results are in and Trelawny has far exceeded its goals by 82%.  Results were at levels 3 & 4.  The overall Board scores however were down.  Congratulations to all our students for a job well done and are encouraged to keep up the good work.

·          There was some required reorganization within classes due to Board limitations of student teacher ratio.  As a result there was a 2/3 split class and the afternoon Kindergarten class has been reduced with an additional full time teacher.

·          This year there was a cut from 3 to 2 buses and all routes are now confirmed.

·          On Friday 21, 2007 there will be a welcome Assembly for all returning and new students and teachers.

PRO

·          The new deadline for spending has now been extended to October 15, 2007.

·          It was not known that the Board pays for all interpreters.  As a result money budgeted for the EQAO interpreters can now be re-allocated.

·          A table will be set up at the Open House to represent school council at which there will be “free” water and coffee.  In addition there will be a chance to win one of 3 prizes in exchange for name and e-mail address for a mentorship program.

·          The remaining money will be used to get a gift certificate from the Super Store to be used at a later date.

·          The mentorship program is being organized in order for parents to have a liaison to discuss any similar concerns or questions.  Parents will be partnered with like ethnicity and their child’s grade age.  It would be especially beneficial for new parents to have a mentor of an already existing parent.  In addition call to the office could potentially be minimized.

Treasurer’s Report

The final numbers were not yet available at the time of our meeting.  A list of how all council monies are being allocated to be added to the next agenda, especially those that will be “Grandfathered”.

Fundraising Report

·          The profits raised from the trial of “The Lunch Lady” program were $500 in total.

Motion:  to fully launch “The Lunch Lady” program-Seconded by Marijana Hagg, Carried by a show of hands.

·          The possibility of “The Lunch Lady” having something to offer as a “Healthy Snack” to be looked at. Another suggestion was Pure Source.

·          It was suggested we re-visit the idea of McMillan’s as they do offer a nut/peanut free facility.

·          The issue of Capital Fundraising to be added to agenda for next meeting.

TEACHERS REPORT

The only concern raised was that of the name of our “Healthy Snack” day.  It was noted the ingredients listed on the products is not indicative of the term.  The term will be given thoughtful consideration and re-named.

Open Discussion

Concerns were raised regarding parents parking of vehicles in NO PARKING zones and in front of residential driveways.  A suggestion was made to contact the City to enforce NOPARKING.   In addition a letter will be sent home notifying parents of issue with suggestion that older students walk to vehicles parked further away.

Meeting adjourned at 9:00pm by Tom Vosper
